Program information

About the program.

In June 2024, the Supreme Court held unanimously in Connelly v. United States that life-insurance proceeds a company receives to redeem a deceased owner's stock are included in the company's fair market value for estate tax. The redemption obligation does not offset it.

Most entity-purchase buy-sell agreements written before Connelly now produce a larger estate tax bill than the drafters expected. If you advise closely held business owners, the buy-sells already sitting in their files need to be reviewed.
